Hire our Microphones & radio mics

Which microphones do you need?

The three that cover most events

A handheld dynamic microphone such as the Shure SM58 for speeches, a radio handheld for anyone who needs to move, and a lavalier or headset clip for a presenter who wants their hands free. Between them they cover weddings, conferences, awards evenings and worship. Condenser microphones are for capturing instruments and choirs rather than for a person talking in a room.

When you need radio rather than wired

• The speaker walks into the audience, or stands in front of a band with no route back to a cable.
• The ceremony is outdoors and a cable run would be a trip hazard.
• Several speakers share one microphone and passing it over is easier than walking to a lectern.

What to look for

• Batteries: radio microphones run on AA cells, so we send fresh ones and a spare set, and recommend a wired backup for the speeches.
• Frequency coordination: several radio systems in one room need their channels planned, which we do before the event.
• Stands and clips — a microphone is no use without something to hold it.

Common questions

How many microphones for a wedding?

One for the celebrant and one or two for readings covers most ceremonies, with a separate handheld for speeches in the evening. If the venue has a fixed lectern microphone, tell us — it changes what we bring.

Will radio microphones interfere with the venue system?

Rarely, and we plan around it: channels are coordinated in advance and we can move to a clear frequency on site if a venue has its own radio kit running.

Can you supply a microphone for a recorded interview?

Yes — for anything being filmed or recorded we would normally use a different microphone to the one we put in front of a live audience. Tell us it is being recorded when you enquire.
