Cable and power: the parts that make a job work
The least interesting line on the quote
Cable and power decide whether the equipment works where the event actually is. A rig that is perfect on paper fails because the desk is forty metres from the stage and nothing reaches, or because the room has two sockets in a corner. This category answers both: signal cable for audio, lighting data and network control, and distribution to get mains power to the right place safely.
Three signals and one supply
- XLR for microphones and balanced audio, and for line level playback into the desk.
- DMX for the lighting, three pin here, running from the controller around the rig.
- Cat5e for Art-Net and network control, where a single reel covers a whole room.
- Mains distribution, RCD protected, from a four-way on a small job to a distro for a stage.
Working out what you need
- Measure the route the cable will take along the walls, not the straight line across the room, then add a couple of metres.
- One long lead beats three short ones joined together. Every joint is a place a channel can drop out mid-speech.
- Anything crossing a doorway or a walkway needs matting or routing around it. The venue will tell you what it allows.
- Ask what the venue can supply for power before we quote the distribution, and pass the answer on when you enquire.
Common questions
- How do I know how much cable to order?
- Measure the route from the desk to the stage and from the control position to the furthest fixture, then add slack. Tell us the room and where everything is going and we will suggest the lengths rather than send you a box of short leads.
- Can I use a microphone lead to control the lights?
- Short runs often work, because both use three-pin XLR plugs, but a microphone cable is not made for the lighting data rate. A rig that flickers intermittently is usually a data problem, and mismatched cable is the first thing to rule out.
- How much power will my event need?
- Add up what is being plugged in: sound, lighting and anything the venue is not supplying. A modest PA and a few lights will run from a single 13A socket; a band with a large lighting rig will not, and the venue needs to know before the day.
Cabling and power, so the equipment you hire actually reaches where it needs to go. XLR leads, DMX and Cat5e runs, and RCD-protected distribution from a single four-way to a full distro for a stage. Every distro is tested before it leaves, and we carry the lengths that suit marquees, churches and old buildings where sockets are few and far from the stage. Delivered across the East Midlands: Lincoln, Boston, Grantham, Nottingham, Mansfield and the towns between.
