Power for an event: what you need to know

Why distribution matters

Sound and lighting need more power than a venue usually expects, and it needs to arrive where the kit is rather than where the sockets are. A distro takes one supply and splits it safely into several protected outlets, with an RCD that cuts the power if something goes wrong.

When you need one

  • The nearest socket is across the room from the stage.
  • More than one or two things need power at the same position.
  • The venue has 16A sockets, or none in the room at all.
  • You are in a marquee or a field where the supply comes from a generator or a commando outlet.

What to check

  • The venue supply: ask what they can give you and where it is, and pass it on when you enquire.
  • Load: a distro distributes power, it does not create it. Tell us what is being plugged in.
  • Cable runs must be safe: across doorways and walkways they need matting or routing around.

Common questions

Can I plug a distro into a normal 13A socket?
Yes, within the limits of that socket — one 13A supply will run a modest sound system or a few lights, not both at full power. Larger rigs need a 16A or 32A supply from the venue.
Do I need to arrange a generator?
Only if the venue has no usable supply. Tell us the site and what you are running and we will say whether the venue is likely to be enough.
Is the equipment tested?
Yes — distribution and cabling are inspected and tested before they go out, and we site the distro rather than leaving you to work it out.

16A and 13A distribution with RCD protection, from a single four-way to a full distro for a stage. Sited and checked by us, so a marquee, barn or church with two sockets in the vestry can still run sound and lighting safely. We will work out the load with you if you are unsure what the venue can give. Sited and delivered to marquees and venues across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, from Stamford to Retford.
