Sound and lighting for a village hall party
High ceilings, hard walls and a caretaker with a key — what actually works in a village hall, from the speeches to the last song.

The room is the hardest part
Village halls are built to be durable, not to flatter a speaker. Hard walls and floors reflect sound, a high ceiling swallows light, and a speaker at one end turns into a muddy mess by the time it reaches the back. The room is not a problem to fight; it is the thing to plan around.
Sound that fills without shouting
- Two speakers on stands, placed in front of the performers and aimed along the room rather than across it.
- A small desk with a channel for the microphone, one for the playlist and a spare or two for a band.
- A subwoofer only if the floor and the neighbours allow it; a pair of tops is often enough for speech-led evenings.
- A wired microphone for the speeches, with a stand, so the person holding it is not also holding a drink.
Lighting a village hall
- Wireless uplighters on the side walls do more for a plain hall than anything else, and need no trailing leads.
- Two effect lights for the dance floor, aimed at the floor rather than at faces.
- No haze unless the hall has agreed to it; many village halls say no, and the room rarely needs it.
- Battery fixtures and a simple setup mean the caretaker is not asked to isolate a circuit at midnight.
Timings, access and the caretaker
Hall bookings usually include setup and clear-down, and the caretaker will have a finish time in mind. Confirm the access time, parking, the alarm and who locks up. Build in 45 minutes at each end: enough to set up, test the microphones and clear away without being rushed at the end of the night.
What it costs
The plug-and-play party PA is £115 for three days, or £140 with local setup, and includes a small mixer, stands and a microphone for the speeches; a subwoofer adds £45. Six wireless uplighters are £70 and ten are £100. Where there is a live band, the live music atmosphere package is £460 including local delivery, setup, programming and pack-down. The quote sets out the exact figures for your dates.
The guest list changes the plan
A mixed-age party needs speech clarity before volume; a band needs a different setup from a playlist; a buffet in a side room changes where the speakers go and where the queue forms. Tell us the shape of the evening and we will plan the room around it rather than dropping the same kit in every hall.
Packages that suit this event
One price for the sound, the lighting and the setup. Choose the package and we will confirm the details for your venue.
Rather hire the individual pieces?
The packages are the simplest way to book the event. Every fixture, speaker and microphone is still hired on its own if you would rather build the rig yourself.
Questions people ask
Can you work with the hall caretaker?
Yes. We confirm access and alarm arrangements with the hall directly if you prefer, and leave the room as we found it.
Are you insured and PAT tested?
We carry public liability insurance and our equipment is PAT tested. Certificates can be sent to the hall before the event.
Can we use a smoke or haze machine?
Only with the hall’s permission. Many village halls say no, so the lighting is planned to work without it rather than relying on haze.
How early can you set up?
From the access time in the hall booking. Setup takes about 45 minutes for sound and lighting, and the same to pack away.
Can you provide a microphone for speeches?
Yes. A wired handheld microphone and stand come with the party PA; a radio microphone is an optional extra if the speeches need to move around the room.
